THE CHALLENGE

Our client, one of the largest gold mining companies in the word, had a critical need: a superintendent of geotechnical and hydrogeology for a Central American mine facing unique challenges in rock and water management. Safety was paramount in this rugged environment, necessitating a leader capable of not only overseeing a large team but also ensuring their well-being amidst challenging conditions.

The company sought a transformative leader—a blend of mentorship for a junior team and technical expertise in a heavy rainfall environment. This individual would steer operations towards excellence while safeguarding the mine's workforce.

Chess pieces on a checkered board.

THE STRATEGY

To ensure a precise fit for this pivotal role, we embarked on an extensive exploration of the organization's needs. We began with discussions with the local team, delving into their insights on the ideal candidate and the technical and leadership qualities required to excel. It became evident that the complexity of the soil body, coupled with the challenges of the tropical location, demanded a leader well-versed in navigating geotechnically challenging open pit mines.

Armed with this understanding, we initiated our search for geotechnical leadership, focusing on individuals with a track record in large hard rock mine sites and experience in managing heavy rainfall conditions. Regular updates were shared with the team as we delved into research and outreach to potential candidates.

The hiring team was given access to a client portal where all interested candidate profiles could be seen along with resumes, education and contact information. With our recommendations in hand, the internal HR team at the mine site were able to contact and set up additional interviews with the candidates and the hiring manager.
