THE CHALLENGE

Our client, a publicly held, major global mining company with a presence in over 20 countries, needed a new Head of US Tax. This critical role required reporting to both the CFO for North America and the Head of Global Tax. The US Tax team had benefited from a long-tenured leader, but the recent replacement had struggled, with the most recent leader having difficulty with the cultural fit and relocation challenges.

Although our team had no prior experience in high-level tax leadership roles, our decades-long partnership with the client on various leadership searches gave us the confidence to take on this challenge. With mutual trust and our commitment to quickly learning the tax space, we were poised for success.

Chess pieces on a checkered board.

THE STRATEGY

We collaborated closely with our client to understand team dynamics, technical requirements, and key success factors for the role. It was essential to find a competent US tax professional who could maintain strong performance and deepen broader business partnerships. Equally important was finding a leader committed to nurturing and building a team undergoing significant change, with both long-tenured members nearing retirement and young professionals shaping the future.

We needed a collaborative, engaged leader who could unite the team under a shared vision, build relationships across the business, and work closely with leadership at all levels.

THE RESULTS

Our team conducted deep investigative research to identify industrial manufacturing tax leaders with expertise in US tax within a multinational organization. We met weekly with the Global Head of Tax to ensure our technical assessments were accurate and aligned with the role's requirements. Given the loyalty and commitment typical of tax leaders, our engagement required a compelling value proposition and patient persistence to attract the most qualified and capable leaders.

We evaluated leaders nationwide, focusing on those with deep US tax expertise and experience being a member of a broader global tax function. Our thorough assessment process resulted in a shortlist of five candidates, narrowed down to three finalists for on-site interviews with the CFO, HR leader, and US tax team members.

The team unanimously selected a leader who impressed them with their energetic, passionate approach and commitment to building high-quality, performance-driven teams. This strategic hire marked a pivotal step in uniting the US Tax team and driving continued success for the organization.
