THE CHALLENGE

Our client, a global leader in reserve power systems, had recently been acquired by a large private equity firm and was undergoing broad leadership changes to prepare for significant planned growth. Amidst this transition, they needed a new (and first) Global Director of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to drive a robust, zero-harm culture across their diverse global manufacturing facilities. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role was critical in transforming the EHS function, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting sustainability across North America and Asia. With a long-standing commitment to innovation and performance, our client required a leader who could align EHS strategies with their broader business objectives while nurturing a safety-first culture.

Chess pieces on a checkered board.

THE STRATEGY

To tackle this complex search, we conducted a highly targeted search for global EHS leaders within well-known and respected manufacturing organizations with strong EHS reputations. Our team spent time with the client to understand the team dynamics, technical requirements, and the strategic importance of this role. We focused on finding a leader who possessed both the large company sophistication and a hands-on approach necessary to build and transform the company’s EHS team and processes.

We deeply vetted candidates’ performance, technical skill sets, and their vision for developing a global standard for EHS. The ideal candidate needed to have experience managing EHS for multiple global operations, a proven track record of driving EHS performance and cultural transformation, and the ability to develop and implement comprehensive EHS strategies.

THE RESULTS

Our exhaustive search and rigorous evaluation process led us to a candidate with extensive experience in a world-renowned manufacturing organization leading EHS initiatives. This leader had successfully transitioned their experience into a smaller, earlier-stage company, demonstrating a keen passion for the evolving EHS function. Their hands-on approach, combined with a strategic vision for global EHS standards, made them an ideal fit for our client.

The selected candidate was not only technically proficient but also passionate about building the future of the EHS function and developing the professionals within the team. Their ability to balance large company sophistication with a hands-on approach ensured they could lead our client into a new era of safety, sustainability, and regulatory excellence.
