THE CHALLENGE

Our client, a prominent global mining company, was in search of an agile and dynamic Assistant General Counsel to support their operations across North America. Renowned for its flat organizational structure, this key role was essential for navigating the company's complex operational environment. The Assistant General Counsel would be responsible for addressing a wide array of compliance and regulatory matters, spanning from initial exploration sites to operational locations and closure properties.

The ideal candidate would be based in the Western US, with the flexibility to travel up to 40% of the time. The role had been open for some time, and our client was not satisfied with the qualifications of the candidates who had applied. Knowing that we had successfully placed similar roles in the past, they sought our assistance to conduct a nationwide search to expand the candidate pool and explore more options.

Chess pieces on a checkered board.

THE STRATEGY

Given our prior success in placing General Counsel positions, our research strategy was two-fold. First, we began by reviewing the initial candidates to calibrate our understanding of the required talent. Leveraging our extensive network, we sought input and potential referrals from trusted industry professionals. Next, our research team conducted a thorough review of the market nationwide. We focused on identifying potential candidates working within natural resources companies and firms supporting clients in the natural resources industry. This dual approach provided a diverse slate of potential candidates with varying levels of experience and specialties, ensuring we could present our client with a robust selection of highly qualified individuals.

THE RESULTS

After conducting a nationwide search across prominent firms and natural resources companies, we presented a diverse slate of candidates, including those from within the industry and from leading firms experienced in supporting natural resource organizations. Throughout the search, we identified the team's openness to mentorship and their balanced view of current accomplishments and future growth potential. The team valued candidates with potential, drive, and a desire to grow in their careers.

This ultimately led to the organization selecting a diverse candidate who brought a strong industry reputation, enthusiasm, and a strong desire to grow into the role. While the chosen candidate would require more initial oversight, they were seen as a valuable addition to the team due to their collaborative, solutions-oriented nature. Their ability to scale any learning curve quickly, combined with sound judgment, demonstrated that they could succeed in supporting any areas of our client's business.
